Larger bodies of water, small water bodies, and shore areas are home to a wide variety of organisms, such as various fish, aquatic insects, mosses, and vascular plants. However, the basic knowledge of aquatic species is significantly weaker than that of terrestrial species. Systematic small-water surveys and species surveys are an important prerequisite for the knowledge-based promotion of nature and water protection. The Environmental Protection Unit of the City of Tampere has prepared a monitoring programme for the ecological status of waterways and small water bodies for 2025–2036 (City of Tampere 2025a).
