The City of Tampere protects nature sites in its area under the Nature Conservation Act, through zoning and as valuable forests. The sites represent forest ecosystems in particular, such as heath forests with a lot of decaying wood or herb-rich groves. As the primary purpose of nature reserves is to protect nature, the city aims to prevent their wear and tear and, for example, to allocate recreational use elsewhere. When updating the nature conservation programme, the habitat type survey provided a basis for identifying the significance of nature values in natural science. Knowledge of habitat types and the monitoring of their condition is critical information for the planning of the management of nature reserves and the monitoring of conservation measures. For example, METSO surveys provide information on the natural values and quality of forest habitats.
